Schimmer identifies how, in both instances, a coalition of European troops fought side by side in order to save Vienna and all of Europe from Ottoman invasion. In 1529 Bohemians, Spaniards and Portuguese were all represented among the city’s defenders, and the siege of 1683 saw the famous intervention of King Jan Sobieski’s Polish Winged Hussars to prevent Ottoman advancement into Europe.
Schimmer had a goal of promoting patriotism through a colourful writing style. It is our strong belief the book was written to a high scholarly standard. It succeeds in conveying a wide range of information regarding the two wars, especially in contextualising the background that led to the two famous battles, while remaining accessible and engaging to the reader.
For this reason we believe that The Sieges of Vienna by the Turks is an important book for the celebration of our common European history and identity.
Legatum Publishing AS are proud to present this updated reprint, which includes a new foreword, illustrations and a short biography of Karl August Schimmer, giving contemporary readers the opportunity to immerse themselves in these historical events.
